Dairy Markets Week in Review
The spot markets were pretty quiet the first week of April. No “April fools.” Block cheese closed the Good Friday-shortened week at $1.42 per pound, unchanged on the week, but 26 cents above that week a year ago. Barrel closed at $1.4150, down a half-cent on the week, but 28 3/4-cents above a year ago. Six cars of block traded hands on the week and five of barrel. The NASS U.S. average block price hit $1.3804, up 2.5 cents. Barrel averaged $1.3972, up 2.6 cents.
Butter closed Thursday at $1.3575, up 2 3/4-cents on the week, and 20 cents above a year ago. Six cars were sold. NASS butter averaged $1.30, up 0.9 cent. NASS nonfat dry milk averaged $1.2378, up 0.4 cent, and dry whey averaged a record high 74.53 cents per pound, up 1.7 cents.
