McDonalds to Serve Fancy Milk-Based Coffees

News EditorIndustry News, Milk

A burger, fries, and a….latte? That will soon be a reality at McDonald’s stores country-wide, as early as next year. Called McCafé, the coffee-bar style “buildouts” will include a menu of cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and baked foods. And, do you know what’s in all those lattes and cappuccinos and mochas? Milk! Isn’t that McCool?

A spokeswoman for the chain’s Southwest region said select restaurants in the region will get McCafé coffee shops prior to the national rollout, which is expected in the first half of 2009. The first McCafés in New Mexico could be phased in before the end of the year.

McDonald’s restaurants in the Louisville, Ky., area were among the first to test market the McCafé Specialty Coffee line. Several Louisville-area McDonald’s owner-operators are now planning renovations to add coffee bars, which will serve cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and baked foods.

About 80 percent of McDonald’s 13,700 U.S. restaurants are independently owned and operated by local franchisees. Every location throughout the U.S. that is able to will phase in a McCafé, said the spokeswoman.

McDonald’s is also testing McCafé kiosks in airports and other locations outside the U.S., said its spokeswoman.

  1. McDonald’s is smart for adapting high-end coffee to a slow economy, but still, their McCafe coffees aren’t a whole lot less than Starbucks
