According to reports out today, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has abandoned his plans to pursue a second beef checkoff.
Just over a month ago, USDA announced it would be seeking input on the development of a new industry-funded promotion, research and information order for beef and beef products. The decision to drop the idea apparently was made as the result of direction from Congress, according to a statement released by USDA.
“(A)s the appropriations bill Congress passed last week directed the Department not to implement a second beef checkoff program, USDA will no longer pursue that solution…USDA encourages the beef industry to work together to determine ways to secure more resources for the beef checkoff program so that it can continue to support cattle ranchers around the country.”
State cattle groups have already commented on the decision, which was reportedly revealed by Secretary Vilsack in an interview with DTN. The Missouri Cattlemen’s Association (MCA) is pleased with Secretary Vilsack’s decision to listen to the outcry from the nation’s cattle farmers and ranchers.
“The Secretary asked for comments and responded appropriately to the concerns expressed by those of us who invest our dollars into the Beef Checkoff Program,” said Missouri Cattlemen’s Association (MCA) President Jim McCann. “MCA considers this announcement to be good news.”
