Pork producers are questioning Subway’s announcement this week that the chain is moving to serving “only protein from animals that have never received antibiotics.”
During a press call this morning coordinated by the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, Dr Jennifer Koeman with the National Pork Board said the restaurant chain has not said how they expect to accomplish this action by the year 2025. “I don’t know how they plan to go about verifying that,” she said. “Organic would be a different definition and I have not heard them use the word organic.”
USFRA farmer representative and Illinois hog farmer Thomas Titus says Subway’s decision could impact the health of animals raised to supply the restaurant industry. “What that means for us is possibly not being able to use antibiotics and not being able to treat animals if they are ill,” he said. “In my opinion, that’s inhumane.”
