nafb-15-150-edited Representatives from Protect the Harvest were on hand during the 2015 National Association of Farm Broadcasters (NAFB) Convention to discuss the organization’s most recent efforts to inform consumers about production agriculture, protect the freedoms of American farmers and ranchers, and respond to the activities of radical animal rights groups, like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Brian Klippenstein, executive director for Protect the Harvest, sat down with AgWired during Trade Talks at the NAFB Convention. He discussed the organization’s involvement with the production of The Wrong Side of Right, the pro-agriculture movie that premiered in July, as well as legislation the group is supporting, and ways farmers can continue to help fight for their freedoms.

“We’re moving agriculture into the popular media space,” he said. “Forrest Lucas, the film’s executive producer, understands the power of the modern information age, and is trying to use all venues available to get the message to the public about the goodness of American agriculture and the threats it confronts. Most viewers will recognize it as a movie about injustice.”

Klippenstein acknowledged the organization’s support for Oklahoma’s State Question 777, also known as the “Right to Farm Amendment,” that will be voted on in November of 2016. The Constitutional amendment, based on similar amendments that have been passed in Missouri and North Dakota, intends to give legal protection for farming rights.

“We live in a hungry and increasingly troubled world, we have an extraordinary challenge of doubling the world’s food supply in the next 40 years, and furthermore doubling it using fewer resources, less land, less water, a smaller carbon footprint,” said Klippenstein. “Yet we have very well-funded nonprofits, multimillion dollar operations, trying to disparage the modern practices and the technology necessary to meet our challenges and serve the public. The ultimate impacts of that are born by consumers, in the form of higher prices and less choice. We’re for choice, we’re for affordable food choices across the board. It doesn’t matter if its organic or conventional, the consumers should decide.”
