Both the poultry and pork production industries have recently seen a major push from consumer retailers for supplies that have been raised without the use of antibiotics. While this request has presented several major animal health challenges for producers, the innovators behind Novus International have been focused on creating solutions for successful production under these new constraints.
Brad Lawrence, from Novus International, was on hand during the 2016 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) to highlight some Novus products that will help producers face the antibiotic free challenges ahead.
“If you look at Novus’ history, it goes back to the 1950s with methionine and antioxidants, and then Novus began to build additional parts of their portfolio that were really focused around animal health with the Minterex minerals, Activate Organic Acids, and the different enzymes we offer,” said Lawrence. “We focus on the nutritional benefits of those, but we also focus on the animal health benefit.”
The different nutritional products offer by Novus work by improving the animal’s natural ability to fight diseases, which reduces incidents of illness and the need to use antibiotics.
“When you look at minimizing antimicrobial use, it really begins with the dam, whether thats a layer or broiler breeder or a sow, and making sure that her offspring are best suited to handle the stresses that they’re going to see as young animals,” said Lawrence. “And you do that by asking how we improve those animals natural defenses, how do we improve their ability to respond to immune challenges, how do we improve their exposure to pathogens, and how do we minimize the impact of things like mycotoxins on the animals.”
