Dr. Roger Main, Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, gave the 2016 North American PRRS Symposium a history lesson on PRRS and the impact vaccinations have played in it’s control during a Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. sponsored session.

“We are 30 years into the virus being alive and well in North America. We are 20 years past the initial PRRS vaccines that have been introduced. It’s been about 15 years since producers and veterinarians have felt very comfortable in their ability to predictably and cost-effectively eliminate PRRS virus from breeding herds.”

However, Dr. Main shared that the greatest challenge has been the control of reinfection of breeding herds from outside sources. The virus is coming from the commercial grow to finish pig populations and he was able to pose questions about opportunities to improve what is being done in growing pigs.
