Dairy Markets Week in Review
Cash cheese prices began 2008 with a 12 1/4-cent jump in block, which closed the New Year’s holiday shortened week at $2.1525 per pound, 81 1/4-cents above that week a year ago. Barrel closed at $2.09, up 11 cents on the week and 74 1/2-cents above a year ago. Four cars of barrel was all that traded on the week. The NASS-surveyed U.S. average block price plunged 9.5 cents, to $1.9894. Barrel averaged $2.0186, down 7.7 cents.
Cash butter closed Friday at $1.2175, down 3 1/4-cents on the week but 1 3/4-cents above a year ago. Nothing was sold on the week. NASS butter averaged $1.3141, down 0.6 cent. NASS nonfat dry milk averaged $1.6440, down a whopping 20 cents. Dry whey averaged 44.31 cents, down 0.3 cent.
