Dairy Markets Week in Review
The cash cheese market this week seemed to ignore the anticipated Friday afternoon January Milk Production report and added to the 34-cent gain of the previous two weeks. Blocks topped $2.00 again, skyrocketing to $2.1150 on Thursday, but closed at $2.05, with Friday’s trading holding at $2.05 per pound, up 6 cents on the week and 75 1/2-cents above that week a year ago.
Barrel closed at $1.99, up 5 1/4-cents on the week and 71 3/4-cents above a year ago. Nine cars of block traded hands on the week and six of barrel. The NASS-surveyed U.S. average block price hit $1.7339, down 6.1 cents. Barrel averaged $1.8354, down a penny and a half.
Cash butter closed Friday at $1.2025, down 1 3/4-cents on the week, and three-quarter cents below a year ago. Seven cars were sold. NASS butter averaged $1.2139, up 1.6 cents. NASS nonfat dry milk averaged $1.3773, down 2.2 cents, and the dry whey average fell to 27.31 cents per pound, down 5.2 cents
