The Dakota Farmer recently reported on a group of dairy producers that are meeting with the S.D. Secretary of Agriculture Bill Even and various creditors and lenders across the state to assist them during this economic crisis. Much needed money will help these producers through their challenges, ensuring the future of milk production for years to come. However, this comes at a time when it’s tough for anyone to get credit for anything. Will dairy producers have any luck in getting the backing they so desperately need?
Dairy producers are facing a “perfect storm” of challenges, according to the South Dakota Dairy Producers. The group organized a meeting of representatives from the state’s major dairy lenders, milk buyers, the governor, secretary of agriculture, congressional field representatives.
“We really need to make everyone more aware of how this financial crisis is continuing to develop,” said Marv Post, SDDP chairman and dairy producer from Volga. “We need open communication with the banking community, the state government, our supporting businesses and our own communities. That’s what we were there to establish.”
