This year’s State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest was a big success thanks in part to the Midwest Dairy Association and SDSU Extension along with the many volunteers who helped organize and run the contest.
Fifty youth from 13 South Dakota counties participated in the Youth In Action event held at the South Dakota State Fair on Sept. 2. Contestants evaluated dairy heifer and cow classes along with a dairy skills problem challenge testing their general knowledge of cattle selection.
Junior and senior age divisions showed off their communication and presentation skills through oral reasons which were judged by fellow dairy cattle producers and industry representatives.
The top four seniors will represent South Dakota at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisc. Oct. 1.
