The unique, sequential breeding system, StrataGEN®, now has an online resource available for the dairy industry to learn more about this exciting breeding program.
StrataGEN development has been under construction for several years, with careful mating and sorting of sires specifically designed to fit the needs of the program. In April 2012 the program was released to combat the rising cost of inbreeding in the dairy industry. StrataGEN uses highly reliable genomic inbreeding data to sort bulls in the Select Sires’ lineup, both proven and genomic young sires, into one of five distinctive genetic lines. These color-coded lines simplify the implementation of StrataGEN on any operation. After consulting with a Select Sires StrataGEN specialist, each herd’s genetic base is identified and a three to five-line rotation is developed based on long-term herd goals and the current inbreeding level of the herd. This one-of-a-kind system can control inbreeding without individual cow matings, making implementation easy.
The StrataGEN online resource is complete with an inbreeding calculator where a dairy producer can determine exactly what inbreeding is costing them. It also includes information about the research behind the program as well as contact information for local StrataGEN specialists.
