The cattle industry’s best stewards of the land were recognized at the recent Cattle Industry Summer Conference. The seven regional Environmental Stewardship Award Program winners will now compete for the national ESAP award, which will be announced at the 2015 Cattle Industry Annual Convention & NCBA Trade Show in San Antonia, TX.
The 2014 regional winners are: Conlan Ranches California/True Grass Farms, Valley Ford, CA.; Rock Hills Ranch, Lowry, SD.; Wineinger-Davis Ranch, CO.; Rocosa Ridge Ranch, Bosque County, TX; Nichols Farms LTD, Bridgewater, IA; Sherwood Acres Farm, LaGrange, KY.; Two Rivers Ranch, Thonotosassa, FL.
I spoke with Guido Frosini, True Grass Farms, and his passion bled through as he explained his family’s operation dedicated to producing beef that fills a large local niche market.
“We have a huge cliental base that is very interested in where their food comes from. We started transitioning to a full-blood Wagyu herd that we cross with Angus mothers. What that has done is help us engage with the community to try and find support and show a transparency to bring people onto the ranch.”
To do this True Grass Farms began offering farm tours. Last year Guido said they brought over 2,000 people to the ranch to show how food is produced. They take pride in educating their consumers about how they produce quality beef that is environmentally sound. Guido was excited to share that vegetarians and vegans have even ended their non-meat diets after visiting their operation.
“We need to be able to give back and pass something better on to future generations. Food production is not just human production. We have to feed our soils to then be able to grow grass and convert that grass into proteins we can all eat.”
