The official USDA tally on the numbers of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 cases in the United States keeps growing, but as of Monday the number of birds affected nationwide was just under 40 million, so it’s safe to say it is well beyond that number.
USDA’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) continues to update the numbers on a scoreboard with easily accessible links to each state totals. It has now been five months and 170 confirmed cases since the first case was discovered in a backyard flock in Oregon.
Iowa continues to report more probable cases almost daily. Another four were announced on Tuesday, bringing the total to 60 in the state although only 50 of those have been officially confirmed by APHIS. The number of birds affected in Iowa is now 28 million and counting. Minnesota, which had another case confirmed this week, now has 82 cases impacting nearly 4.5 million birds.
Nebraska has only had two confirmed cases, but Governor Pete Ricketts has already declared a state of emergency to ensure the availability of resources for state agencies to address the situation.
