Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) is committed to its customers, the swine producer. Hard economic times are inevitable in the agriculture industry, but the pork community has hit some tough times in recent years and BIVI is here to help. During last week’s World Pork Expo, they hosted a Lunch & Learn to give advice for producers in managing swine production costs during these tough times.
Dr. Aaron Lower, Carthage Veterinary Service, discussed management strategies for surviving. In his talk he addressed key management and production factors to consider, strategies that have shown promise for return on investment and steps to take today and tomorrow.
“When we get into these tough times it is important that we are extremely efficient and we are very aggressive with our health programs, implementation of those, the diagnostics and understanding the health of our flow of pigs in order to try and get the highest percentage of pigs to market.”
He also addresses a common question he gets from producers about partial dosing to save costs. He said it is very hard to measure if partial dosing influences performance. “If you want to take that risk, you are putting yourself at risk during a time when you can’t make mistakes.”
