The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) hosted a press conference to provide their reaction to the Food Safety Modernization Act “Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Preventive Controls for Food for Animals” final rule.
The call featured staff experts Richard Sellers, senior vice president of legislative and regulatory affairs, and Leah Wilkinson, director of ingredients, pet food and state affairs.
Both Sellers and Wilkinson were actively involved in the industry’s development of comments pertaining to the animal food rule and work closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as part of the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance.
Sellers said, “The actual rule will publish on Sept. 17th. That is the date that is important for implementation. It legally goes into affect 60 days after that.” He added that there are two basic sets of rules. The Hazard Analysis and Risk Based Preventative Control rule and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice rule.
