Lee Morey, 19 year old college student from Rochester, Alberta, claimed top honors out of a field of thirteen talented dairy youth in this year’s World Dairy Expo Youth Fitting Contest. It is his second time winning the top honor, and his 5th consecutive year placing in the top five of the competition.
Contestants had 60 minutes to fit their animal to show ready, and were judged on criteria such as ease of handling equipment, sprays and adhesives, proper clipping technique and proper topline hair grooming. The prize for the champion was a pair of clippers courtesy of Aesculap AG Germany
Morey has the dairy industry in his blood: He grew up on the largest Jersey dairy farm in Canada, and doesn’t remember a time when he was not going to dairy shows. It became his greatest passion in life, and he has continually been hired to travel across Canada and down into the United States to work with other farms at some of the biggest dairy shows in the world. He sees a future in the industry, and already has growing Jersey herds of his own.
“It’s very hard work, but it really has taught me the importance of having a passion in life, and how much work people are willing to do for their passions” he said in an interview at the 2015 World Dairy Expo, “Agriculture has taken me to a lot of different places, I have it to thank for a lot of different things in my life. It’s taught me how to be good person and a good member of society.”
