The nation’s pork producers used Trade Talk at the 2015 National Association of Farm Broadcasters (NAFB) Convention as an opportunity to discuss the impact of several major US policy and trade decisions that recently went into effect, and highlighted ways the pork industry is getting involved.

John Weber, President-Elect for the National Pork Producers Council(NPPC), sat down with AgWired, giving his thoughts on the results from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) conclusion reached last month, as well as the pork industry’s stance on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) controversial Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule, which officially went into effect August 28th.

“We were very pleased with the results of the TPP,” he said, “As we started going through the details of the text, we think it’s going to be a huge boost for the US Pork Producers.”

Weber clarified that NPCC and several other livestock industry representatives have filed a lawsuit against the EPA regarding WOTUS.

“It’s a far-reaching, regulatory grab that’s going to impact all of agriculture, not just the pork producers, and we felt that any input from the various agricultural sectors across the country has been completely ignored,” he said. “We would really like to work with EPA, to sit down, start over with the process, and come up with solutions that are workable both with agriculture and trying to improve the nations water.”
