The Swine Health Information Center is funded by the National Pork Board with checkoff money and is devoted to swine diseases circulating internationally and emerging diseases in the United States, targeting research on those diseases, and fostering producer to producer communications.
During the recent NAFB Trade Talk, I spoke with Dr. Paul Sundberg, Executive Director for the center to learn more about their efforts combating swine diseases. “We know from PED lessons that we remain at risk for getting diseases into the country. There are a number of ways they come and we just don’t have the ability to plug all of those holes.”
Dr. Sundberg said there are multiple viruses in China that they are monitoring. He is also concerned about the reemergence of PED this winter. The immunity of the virus doesn’t last long and there are many susceptible pigs across the country.
