This week’s audio report from the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) discusses the home meal replacement (HMR) trends becoming popular among South Korean consumers and the ways that U.S. pork and beef industries can help fill this need.
A team of South Koren meat buyers recently visited the U.S. to learn more about the trend and look into possible ways to fit U.S. products into the trend. The team included representatives from three of Korea’s largest retail chains: Emart, Homeplus and Lottemart.
The group toured the Claremont, Minnesota, farm of USMEF Chair-elect Bruce Schmoll. In the report, USMEF Korea Director Jihae Yang explained that the team came away very impressed with the scale and efficiency of U.S. grain production.
While in Minnesota, the team also received a tour and product sampling at the Hormel Foods plant in Austin and visited several retail outlets. Their next stop was Colorado, where they made additional retail visits and attended a seminar and product sampling conducted by Chef Jay McCarthy.
