During the 2014 National Association of Farm Broadcasting’s Trade Talk intern, Taylor Truckey, sat down with fellow Michiganite, Dale Norton. Dale is President of the National Pork Board and after they found out they are from neighboring hometowns, they chatted about their new initiative, People, Pigs & Planet that they are using to bridge the gap between producer and consumer.
“This is a five year strategic plan that was developed as a task force and included packers, retailers, producers and academia. The focus now is on the customer. Seeing as many customers are far removed from the farm, it is one was to reconnect them and tell our story.”
The people are our customers and we are happy to show them our pigs and how we treat them. The planet encompasses our environment and producer’s sustainability efforts. Dale said one way they are building consumer trust is through social media. They are also a part of the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, who has made great strides to involve the consumer in the food production process.
Pork is the number one consumed protein world-wide. Dale goes on to share what U.S. producers are doing to meet the demand for their product globally. Interview with Dale Norton, National Pork Board
