The cash cheese market gave back much of the previous week’s gains this week. The block price closed Friday at $1.24 per pound, down 4 cents on the week, and 16 cents below that week a year ago when it dropped almost 7 cents. Barrel closed Friday at $1.2475, down 1 1/4-cents on the week, and 10 1/4-cents below a year ago. Eight cars of block traded hands on the week and only one of barrel. The NASS U.S. average block price slipped 2.5 cents, to $1.2216. Barrel averaged $1.2340, down 3.4 cents.
Cash butter closed Friday at $1.2750, down 8 cents on the week, and 30 1/4-cents below a year ago when butter dropped almost 6 cents. Only eight cars were sold on the week. NASS butter averaged $1.3146, up 2.4 cents.

Cash block cheese started the week by gaining three cents and closed Friday at $1.28 per pound, up 7 3/4-cents on the week, but 18 3/4-cents below a year ago, and back on top of the barrel price. Barrel closed Friday at $1.26, up 3 3/4-cents on the week, but 13 cents below a year ago. Twenty eight cars of block traded hands and three of barrel. The NASS surveyed U.S. average block price slipped to $1.2464, down 1.4 cents. Barrel averaged $1.3322, down 3 cents.
Butter closed Friday at $1.3550, down a half on the week, and 28 cents below a year ago. Seven cars were sold. NASS butter averaged $1.2883, up 1.2 cents.
Two unfilled bids pushed cash Grade “A” nonfat dry milk pole vaulting 26 cents on Tuesday, followed by a 15 cent jump Wednesday, and finished Friday at $1.65 per pound, reflective of the tight market. Extra Grade remained at $1.05.
The November Federal order Class I base milk price was announced Friday morning at $12.40 per hundredweight (cwt.), down 2 cents from October, $2.16 below November 2005, and triggers a 43.9-cent MILC payment to producers.
The NASS butter price averaged $1.2820 per pound, down 1.7 cents from October. Cheese averaged $1.2846, down 2.2 cents. Nonfat dry milk averaged 88.91 cents, up 3.5 cents, and dry whey averaged 35 cents, up 3.4 cents.

Block cheese closed Friday at $1.2025 per pound, down a penny on the week, after losing almost a nickel the previous week, and is 25 1/2-cents below that week a year ago. Barrel, after some jockeying up and down, closed at $1.2225, down 2 1/4 from the previous week, and 15 3/4-cents below a year ago. Twelve cars of block traded hands on the week and four of barrel. The NASS-surveyed U.S. average block price slipped to $1.2605, down 2.6 cents. Barrel averaged $1.2981, up 0.9 cent.
Butter closed at $1.36, up 2 3/4-cents on the week, but 28 3/4s below a year ago. Twenty three cars were sold. NASS butter averaged $1.2760, down 0.9 cent. Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk held all week at $1.24 and Extra Grade held at $1.05. The NASS-surveyed powder price averaged 88.45 cents, up a half-cent.

Yoyos are fun to play with but they raise havoc in dairy markets. The cash market in the last week of September gave back the previous week’s gains and then some with the exception of nonfat dry milk, which shot up Friday. Block cheese closed Friday at $1.26, down seven cents on the week, and 33 1/2-cents below a year ago. Barrel closed at $1.30, down four cents on the week, and 13 3/4-cents below a year ago. 11 cars of block traded hands on the week and two of barrel. The NASS U.S. average block price at $1.2834, lost 0.6 cent. Barrel averaged $1.3488, down 1.8 cents.
Milk supplies may be tight but mild weather is helping the girls put more of it in the tank, milk yields are increasing, and sufficient dairy product inventories are keeping concern to a minimum as to any shortages in the holiday buying season.
Butter closed at $1.3050, down 1 1/2-cents on the week, and 34 1/4-cents below a year ago. Two cars were sold. NASS butter averaged $1.2851, down a penny. Grade A nonfat dry milk shot up 12 cents yesterday, settling at $1.02. Extra Grade went up 11 cents to $1.01.

40-Cent Increase From CWT
In July, dairy producers began contributing 10 cents per hundredweight to the Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) program. Now an independent analysis reports that the affects of CWT has been at least 40 cents since it began in 2003.

Eight cars of block traded hands on the week and three of barrel. The NASS U.S. average block price hit $1.2882, up 2.4 cents. Barrel averaged $1.3040, up 0.1 cent.

Barrel also closed at $1.2725, up three-quarters of a cent on the week, but 28 1/2-cents below a year ago. Twelve cars of block traded hands on the week and three of barrel.
