National Animal ID Documents Available for Review

News EditorAnimal ID, Government

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the availability of three National Animal Identification System documents for review and public comment.

“NAIS is a true partnership among states, industry, and USDA, and by working together, we have met our goal of having twenty-five percent of the Nation’s premises registered by the end of January. However, we continue to seek our partners’ input on the design and implementation of NAIS,” said Bruce Knight, undersecretary of USDA’s marketing and regulatory programs mission area. “The documents we are releasing today will further advance the dialogue on NAIS and guide our collaborative efforts as the program moves forward. We are committed to working together to build a system that works for everyone.”

The Draft User Guide includes the most up-to-date NAIS information. It provides details on participating in the program and discusses NAIS’ three components, premises registration, animal identification, and animal tracing. USDA initially posted the document in November 2006 with a request for comments and to date, has received valuable feedback. Publishing the Draft User Guide in the Federal Register expands the opportunities for interested parties to comment on the document.

USDA encourages all interested parties to submit comments on any of the three documents or other aspects of NAIS. Comments are now being accepted through the NAIS Web site email address animalidcomments@aphis.usda.gov, or by mail to NAIS Program Staff, Veterinary Services, APHIS, 4700 River Road, Unit 200, Riverdale, MD 20737.

  1. NAIS is a business plan, says so right on the cover.

NAIS (National Animal Identification System) can best be explained like this; the general public is told NAIS is a plan to track/protect us from animal disease. But NAIS National Animal Identification System (NAIS) business plan was designed by and for corporate ag and chip makers with the false mantra “to show the world what a safe food supply we have”. The plan benefits agri-biz global market by keeping track of every privately owned livestock animal in the US EXCEPT the ones on the factory farms. Those who even one livestock animal will have to register their premises, microchip and file reports to the govt on every move those animals make BUT Big Ag gets one lot number for their groups of animals and does not have to tag/track every critter…Currently only registered sex deviants have to register their homes and file movement reports with the govt. And exactly how does keeping track of a pot belly pig in suburbia or a pony that will never become part of the food supply help keep beef free of mad cow disease that is sold to the Japanese? Because if disease is suspected, an entire 6 mile radius of animals can be depopulated (killed) and that is supposed to show the foreign buyers that disease is being kept under control!!!!! Silly, isn’t it, but that is what $100 million plus of your tax dollars is going to fund. And when the buy local market is wiped out, big ag will have all the marbles!!!!

But NAIS tracibility ends at the moment the animal goes to slaughter, which is when most food safety issues occur. See nonais.org for more info.

  4. YOu might read this comment against NAIS and say what business does this person, who is not even in the dairy business, have on commenting on something they know nothing about? I agree 100%!!!! But under NAIS, every last critter is included, which makes me a part of YOUR business, even though I never wanted to be….

NAIS is a business plan made to benefit corporate ag. I have been included in a business (NAIS word is partnership) that I want nothing to do with, yet I will be expected to fund it and follow rules I think are unfair and overburdoning and that go against my constitutional rights.

So you will understand where I am coming from let me explain it like this …

What if I had a business, say selling cars, and I wrote the plans including YOU to be part of it just because you happen to own a vehicle. I never asked you nor care what you think. But while I get to have my cars, buy them, sell them and take them anywhere I want with very few restrictions, I made rules that require YOU to to tell the govt everywhere you go, microchip the car, because I see I can make money off of it and since I have so many, I made the rules where I get special considerations that will save me money. Then I make up some cover story that by YOU following all the rules in MY plan, it will somehow help save the environment.

    Get it now?

But we are told that NAIS is about tracking disease and keeping our food supply safe….sorry, that is not so.

NAIS tracking ends at time of slaughter. Most food safety issues occur AFTER that, during processing.

There are already disease tracking protocol in place, and they work just fine.

Agri biz gets ONE lot number per groups of animals, any one of which could be sick and who would know… while the rest of us have to tag/track every animal individually and pay for it.

If disease is suspected, depopulation of an entire 6 mile radius (140 square miles) is what is prescribed in the NAIS business plan. Facts are most diseases can be cured, innoculated against or prevented.

If NAIS is about protecting the “national herd” (language straight out of fascist/communist ideologies) why then, when Creekstone Beef wanted to test every cow they process for BSE, the USDA says they could not!!! They claimed it would cost too much money. Creekstone had to take the USDA to court to sue for the right to test for BSE!

What about the foot and mouth outbreak in England? The US has not had FM since 1929. England does not allow for vaccination. The FM was traced back to the local lab where it had “escaped” from. Out of the millions of animals killed, only a small percentage tested really had the disease, which is not deadly, animals can survive it. What about the dirty business of dealing with the piles of dead cows. Surely more disease would come from that mess!

So to conclude, I have been drug into something I do not want be a part of and I trying to get out of it, but since I am now part of YOUR business, I will not remain a silent partner.
