Technical Development Manager, Travis Kidd, talked to me at the recent NAFB Trade Talk about Advanta Seed’s grain sorghum hybrids. Their advanced traits provide drought tolerance and resistance to disease and pests.
Research plays a big part of Travis’ job. One of those projects is with Texas Tech University who they have teamed up with to do some product testing on beef feed lots and dairy rations. “One of our focuses is on water utility and water use. Sorghum is a great fit for those extreme environments.”
Looking into the economic side of sorghum, Travis said, “Number one is the seed costs are a lot less then a silage corn seed. It’s a very nitrogen friendly crop so less fertilizer is needed.”
The goal of this research is to help beef and dairy nutritionists formulate rations enabling them to use sorghum more wisely.
