    A ‘Moo’-Cent

    Chuck ZimmermanIndustry News, International

How does a cow from Georgia say ‘moo’? Well, if Lloyd Green is right, it’s with a southern accent! Green, from southwest England, is one of several farmers from Britian claiming their cows moo with an accent.

“I spend a lot of time with my Friesians and they definitely ‘moo’ with a Somerset drawl,” he said, referring to the breed of dairy cow he owns. Apparently the biggest influence on accents is peer groups — on children in the playground, for example,” he said. “Herds are quite tight-knit communities and don’t tend to leave the area.”

    Cow Power

    Chuck ZimmermanIndustry News

The folks in Vermont are showing their dedication to agriculture again with the country’s only renewable energy program called Cow Power. Offered by the state’s Public Service Corporation, residents and businesses can choose to switch a percentage of their energy costs to Cow Power, paying a premium of 4 cents per kilowatt hour, which goes to participating farm-producers, to purchase renewable energy credits when enough farm energy isn’t available, or to the CVPS Renewable Development Fund. The fund makes grants to farmers to develop on-farm generation. Farm-producers receive 95 percent of the market price for the energy sold.

The state’s largest electric utility created the program to help improve manure management while providing financial opportunities for the state’s dairy farmers.

Human Gene Sequencing CenterWe’re not talking denim here.

I’ve been tempted to watch the show “CSI” because one of my daughters finds it fascinating. So although I haven’t watched it, I do get to hear about it. Now, it looks like the dairy industry is getting closer to having the ability to track cow DNA even better than Gil Grissom can track a murder case. The Bovine Genome Sequencing Project, similar to the Human Genome Sequencing Project, is nearing completion after three years of work.

According to the press release: “The mapping of the bovine genome will make it possible to improve the health and disease management of cattle and enhance the nutritional value of beef and dairy products.”

    The Milkman Cometh

    Chuck ZimmermanDairy Business, International

The MilkmanThe residents of Britian are going to keep their milkmen! Here across the pond, the milkman has become an image of a time gone by, but in the UK, the home delivery is still very much a reality.

Dairy Crest, which according to its website is the UK’s premier chilled dairy foods company, will take over rival, Arla’s Express Dairies, business.

The move sees Dairy Crest become the largest doorstep milk supplier in Britain, and some believe the deal may save the country’s remaining 9,500 milkmen from oblivion.
