Arm & Hammer BoothOne of the exhibitors here is Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition Group. They’ve got a new website up so dairy producers have an online destination to learn more about them and their products.

I spoke with Scott Morey (pictured on the right) who is their Senior Business Manager. He says they’re focused on dairy nutrition from a product standpoint and are here to talk about a variety of products.

Scott says that he’s hearing from producers that times are good. He wants producers to know that Arm & Hammer is focused on reproduction since they see that there’s room for improvement in this area.

Dairy Producers are in the Beef Business Too

Cattlemen's Beef BoardWe may be at a dairy show but there’s been plenty of opportunities to eat some good beef. In fact, the Cattlemen’s Beef Board is here and I spoke with their CEO, Tom Ramey.

Tom points out that dairy cows make up 22% of the beef supply and that’s significant. He says that half of our beef is being marketed as whole muscle cuts.

Tom also says that research shows that the Checkoff has added about $70 – $100/head on dairy cows in the last few years. He says that producers can go to BeefBoard.org to find out more and that they’ve started a weekly email to communicate what’s being done with Checkoff dollars. To subscribe to it just email your request to be put on the list to Diane Henderson.

Site Offers Tools to Address Vet Shortage

News EditorEducation, Industry News, Research, Training, Veterinary

There’s a new website out there that is attempting to deal with this country’s critical shortage of large animal veterinarians. The site includes resources for veterinary medicine colleges, state associations, allied partners and the agricultural industry.

Today, only about 17 percent of veterinarians work in food supply, which includes private and public practice veterinarians involved in the entire food chain from farm to fork.

Research forecasts a shortfall of four percent to five percent per year in the ranks of food supply veterinarians.

We are at a crossroads. Americans are demanding, now more than ever, healthy and wholesome food, and there aren’t enough veterinarians on the front lines helping to make sure their expectations are met.

Many entities are working to spread the news that food supply veterinary medicine is at a critical juncture and deserves national attention. They are sharing information, building coalitions, lobbying for legislation and trying to recruit more students into the food supply field.

These Web pages are part of that effort, and they complement the many ongoing efforts currently under way to increase the number of food supply veterinarians around the country, particularly in rural areas. The links below will guide you to valuable information about the food supply veterinary shortage, what’s being done to address it, and tools that you and your organization can use to meet one of society’s greatest needs – a safe and healthy food supply.

Stress Reducing Milk

News EditorInternational, Milk

Do you have a high-level of stress in your life? Then, try the new “adult milk!” Bottled by a Japanese dairy called Nakazawa Foods the milk might induce even more stress to consumers at a cost of $43 a quart. That’s nearly 30 times the price of regular milk!

According to Australia’s Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper, Tokyo-based Nakazawa Foods will start selling the Adult Milk line of products next month, aimed at “adults who live in a stressful society,” quoting the company’s press release.

The price is nearly 30 times as expensive as ordinary milk even in Tokyo, which is known for having the highest cost of living on the planet.

The milk is taken from cows once a week at the break of dawn as they produce higher levels of the hormone melatonin during the night, the company said. The hormone is reported to have ability to lower anxiety and even some forms of depression in people.

Bottled within six hours of milking at a farm north of Tokyo, Adult Milk is said to contain three to four times as much melatonin as the standard stuff.

Record Wisconsin Cheese Production

Wisconsin Dept of AgricultureRecord cheese production was announced today at World Dairy Expo by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture.

Governor Jim Doyle today announced Wisconsin cheese production set a new record in 2006, producing nearly 2.5 billion pounds of cheese, accounting for 26 percent of the national cheese market. Wisconsin’s growth is fueled by the increase in national demand for high-quality, specialty cheeses, and Wisconsin’s powerful dairy sector. Specialty cheese production in Wisconsin grew by 26 million pounds, accounting for nearly 45 percent of the national specialty cheese market.

On hand to talk about it here this morning was Wisconsin Secretary of Agriculture, Rod Nilsestuen. I interviewed him to learn more about what this means to the state. He also talks about all the ways the Doyle administration is working to help farmers and in particular those involved in the dairy industry.

Chuck interviews Shelly MayerThe Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin is lead by Executive Director Shelly Mayer. It sound like things are going well for the organization. Their mission is to “share ideas, solutions, resources and experiences that help dairy producers succeed.”

I spoke with Shelly in their exhibit near one of the entrances to the main exhibit hall here at World Dairy Expo. She says that the organization was formed in 1992 and that producers have done a “robust” job in growing the organization. They have producers from many other states that are attending their educational sessions now.

Here at Expo they use the opportunity to meet with producer members and recruit new ones, including working with young people interested in the business.

National Dairy Animal Well-Being Initiative Announced

Chuck ZimmermanAnimal Health, Audio, BASF Plant Science, Charleston-Orwig, Education, Hoard's Dairyman, Training, World Dairy Expo

National Dairy Animal Well-Being InitiativeThis morning at World Dairy Expo a producer-led coalition of dairy groups and companies announced the National Dairy Animal Well-Being Initiative. They’re proposing dairy animal well-being guidelines and principles.

One of the groups participating in the effort is the National Milk Producers Federation. I spoke with their Senior Vice President of Communications, Chris Galen (not pictured) about what his organization is doing and specifically about this new animal well-being initiative. He says that it would be naive to think that the animal rights activists (whackos would be my term to describe them) will ignore dairy since they’ve been so much on the attack of poultry and pork. The initiative effort he says puts the dairy industry on the offense in addressing the concerns that these well funded groups have on consumers.

The sales manager for World Dairy Expo is John Rozum. John played a key role in getting World Dairy Diary started several years ago when we got this dairy news website kicked off here at the show.

This year Cindy interviewed John to learn what the latest is about the show. He talks about the virtual farm tour that was started several years ago. He says that they’re hoping for a very big year for attendance this year. John works directly with the sponsors and he says they’re key to helping making the show happen. If you couldn’t make it to Expo this year then John says plan ahead for next year.
