Westfalia Rob KohlWestfaliaSurge has not only a very large but a very cool exhibit here at World Dairy Expo. In fact, when I spoke with Rob Kolb, VP of Marketing, North Americas Region he says they won the best booth of the year award.

Rob says that they’re showing their full range of products like their parlor stalls and something new which is automatic take off and milk metering.

Besides displaying he says they’re a big sponsor of Expo which includes sponsoring each breed champion in the shows. Because of WestfaliaSurge’s sponsorship they’ll be receiving $1,000!

Ring Side With Charleston|Orwig

Mike OppermanThere are only a few select suites ringside at the World Dairy Expo coliseum and one of them is occupied by Charleston|Orwig during the show for meetings and entertaining clients.

Since Charleston|Orwig is one of our sponsors for coverage of World Dairy Expo this year, this “Milking Parlor” podcast is with Mike Opperman, account supervisor with C-O. It was through the agency’s inquiries that we decided to start the Milking Parlor as a regular feature on World Dairy Diary, and for Charleston|Orwig, it is a way to help them demonstrate to their clients the potential for new media.

Executive Kisses Hershey Goodbye

News EditorIndustry News

The Hershey Co., makers of the world-famous Hershey Kisses and other delicious chocolate treats, announced that chief executive officer Richard Lenny would retire at the end of 2007. Lenny, 55, joined the company as CEO in 2001 from Kraft Foods Inc.

David J. West, Hershey’s chief operating officer, was named company president and a director, effectively immediately, and will become chief executive on Dec. 1, the board said in a statement.

Lenny may be leaving out of frustration with the trust that controls the majority of Hershey’s shares, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Hershey Trust tried and failed five years ago to sell the company after opposition from Pennsylvania lawmakers.

“In the last couple of quarters, there’s been some disappointing performance, and there’s no question the man’s been under some intense pressure,” said Marvin Roffman, an analyst at Roffman Miller Associates Inc., of Philadelphia, which owns Hershey shares.

Hershey, the maker of its namesake chocolate bars and Kisses treats, forecast in July a drop in annual profit on higher dairy costs and increased competition from Mars Inc., known for its M&Ms candies and Snickers bars. Hershey plans to cut 12 percent of its workforce, reduce the number of assembly lines, and transfer some operations to Mexico to lower costs.

Getting the Arena Floor Scoop

Pooper ScooperIt’s a rough job but someone’s got to do it.

You’ve got to keep the arena floor clean.

With all the animals parading through here these essential “scoopers” do keep busy.

At least the arena here at World Dairy Expo is nice and cool and you can’t beat the polka music.

Today on the schedule we’ve got the International Junior Holstein Show, Central National Ayrshire Show, various educational seminars, and the Central National Jersey Show. Of course the trade show is open, which takes place in virtually every space available on the grounds.

Just Say Cheese Sandwich

Junior ShowOne of the not-to-miss taste treats at World Dairy Expo is the world famous Badger Dairy Club cheese sandwich, an incredible bargain at just $1.50 each, with milkshakes for only $1.25.

Sponsored this year by BASF Plant Science, the Cheesestand at expo is the club’s primary fundraising event. The University of Wisconsin group has about 140 members and offers opportunities for them to engage in activities and experiences within the college, community and the ever progressing dairy industry.

Junior Show 2Besides grilling and selling thousands of cheese sandwiches each year, the Badger Club is involved in a number of activities at World Dairy Expo. Two weeks before the doors open to the public, they begin setting up the show and building the showring, including setting up all of the showring decorations and laying the famous colored shavings each day. During the week they continue to manage behind the scenes duties making sure everything is looking good and running smoothly. And once the show is over, they take everything down, clean the barns and put everything back into storage.

Interview with Jerry WeigelJerry Weigel is the global nutrition manager for BASF Plant Science. I spoke to him about their NutriDense product which is what they’re promoting at their booth here at World Dairy Expo.

Besides talking with producers about NutriDense which is a nutritionally-enhanced corn that contains a stacked set of output traits that enhance animal feed performance he says they’ve got some incentives for those that stop by their booth.

One of those includes a free world famous grilled cheese sandwich and a milk shake. You can watch the video or listen to the interview:

Expo Exhibiting

WDX Diamond VThere are over 700 exhibitors at World Dairy Expo showing their wares to more than 60,000 visitors from some 80 countries.

One exhibitor I interviewed for our “Milking Parlor” podcast from World Dairy Expo is Bruce Hageman, global director of marketing for Diamond V.

“Diamond V is headquartered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and we manufacture an all natural yeast-based product that essentially helps with the digestive process in all livestock,” said Hageman. Because they market globally, World Dairy Expo is an excellent venue for them to talk with producers about their products. He says producers are especially interested in efficiency this year, more so than normal.

“Particularly this year, feed prices are high and getting higher. Fortunately, so are milk prices. But everybody is concerned with controlling costs and always concerned about efficiency and that is one of the key features of our products.”

The other major area of interest this year, he says, is feeding more by-products and co-products and how to utilize them more effectively.
